Did you know more than half of people living with HIV in the U.S. are ages 50 and above?*

September 18th is National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day, a day that focuses on the increasing number of people living long full lives with HIV and calling attention to the unique, health and social needs of older adults with HIV.

As people with HIV age, their health care and social needs alter. Often, older adults with HIV experience social isolation and lack of support, loneliness and HIV/age-related stigma, which prevents the care they need to stay healthy.

On this day, and everyday, we ask you to support and spread awareness on the health needs of older people living with HIV.

Things to consider in support of older people living with HIV:

  • Support groups

  • Peer support

  • Social organizations

  • Access to care

  • Perceptions and realities related to stigma and aging

"I see my MCC team at MHF as a beacon of light to everyone trying to establish and re-establish their lives after being diagnosed with HIV/AIDS.”

-Francis Ocon, RN, MCC Medical Care Manager

“I see each member of our crew as a torch bearer of hope, love happiness and optimism, that despite a stumble, life will prevail, life will go on and you can achieve your goals and your hearts’ desires as long as you keep yourself healthy and surround yourself with people that truly care for your success in love, life and in health,” says Ocon. “I would like to encourage my MCC crew and my MHF colleagues to raise that torch high and proud so everyone in the dark about HIV/AIDS can see the light and feel its warmth."
