Every day, our PrEP Navigators at MHF are helping folks get access to PrEP and PEP, regardless of their insurance status, residency status, or ability to pay.

Chris Bouffier, one of our PrEP navigators, sat down with us to debunk some of the most common myths about PrEP, and to help explain how someone interested in PrEP can easily get access to the medication that is 99% effective in preventing HIV.

What is PrEP?

CB: PrEP is a medication which prevents patients from getting HIV and works 99% if taken daily. To work to its fullest potential, it has to be in your system for at least 7 days. 

As a PrEP Navigator, what services do you provide to patients?

CB: As a PrEP Navigator, I am here to assist all patients who need assistance with PrEP. I also inform patients about the medication and address any concerns regarding PrEP.

Despite the fact that clinical study results show that PrEP is up to 99% effective in people who are at risk of getting HIV, not all patients have access to it. What are some of the obstacles that prevent people from getting access to PrEP?

CB: A lot of patients think that PrEP is very expensive. Indeed, the drug is expensive— but that’s exactly where we can help with our assistance. Our programs cover all related PrEP services in our facility as well as the actual medication itself. Everyone who’s eligible for any of our programs will not get a bill or face any costs at all.

Oftentimes misinformation or lack of awareness about PrEP will lead to lack of usage. What are some of the common misperceptions about PrEP and how do you dispel them? 

CB: I think a lot of patients hesitate because they think the medication is too expensive and their health insurance won’t cover it. Also, many patients assume that the medication can cause significant discomfort. Like stomach eggs, diarrhea or other related side effects. With the new and updated version Descovy we haven’t had of our patients complaining to us of any side effects. I think those are stories we have to tell to engage our community and make a statement that Descovy PrEP is not bad for you at all. 

How can Men’s Health Foundation provide care for those wanting to protect themselves from HIV? 

CB: Men’s Health Foundation politic and slogan says we don’t turn anyone away. We on the PCC team do everything possible to provide every patient with navigation services— insured, uninsured, undocumented: it doesn’t matter. We truly believe that with our services and assistant anyone can get on PrEP for no cost.
